It really seems that the divide is private vs academic. You will need a PhD for academia, but not in the private sector. In the private sector it is more about experience and results than the title and level of education.

It is a popular misconception that you would have to be mad to start a PhD. As we
will show below, there are a number of other possible reasons for postgraduate
studies. Still, this is a good one. If you are stark raving bonkers, you will fit right in
to the academic world. If insanity is your main reason for wanting to do a PhD,
however, there are a few things you should consider first. Have you sought
treatment? Many mental illnesses are now curable or at least controllable with a
simple course of medication. Others may be resolved with appropriate counselling in
less time than it takes to complete a PhD. If, however, you are certain that your
insanity will last the distance, go right ahead and sign those scholarship forms.

It really all depends on the field you're looking to go into. A Ph.D. is a typical prerequisite for a career as a university professor or researcher however It shouldn't be a MUST in the corporate world where most of the time or sometimes practical experience is required over academic credentials.

Yeah. Experience should be given more importance than a degree.

Adam, never a truer word was spoken.
There are more nutcases, fruitcakes and social outcasts etc etc in academia than anywhere I know. I came from the private sector world into what I believed was going to turn out to be a nice position in academia, thats not looking at gaining a professorship either. A simple academic researcher would have sufficed.

However, a number of years down the line and I find myself clawing at the stained walls of the institution. In an attempt to get away from the viciousness that lurks within and the constant gutteral wailing of 'Look at me I am so important' eminating from behind the paint blisterd doors atopped with the inmates title 'Professor Insecure, Professor Obnoxious, Professor Callous, Professor egotistic'.

As someone who is always writing, here's a tip:

Just start. Start somewhere even if it's only a paragraph. Gradually, as ideas come to you any part of the day, you'll write more.

The key is to start.

Completely agree. It is too much of a common misconception. Experience > Degree.

A good friend of mine has just finished his PhD and now people are basically telling him he is overqualified. For four years he lived on little money, accumulated a big debt and now he can't find work. I suspect the fact that he hasn't worked a full time job for four years is a big factor.
