NJ stalls stem cell plans
[Entry posted at 24th June 2008 03:39 PM GMT]

New Jersey officials have pulled funds for the construction of a state stem cell institute which broke ground eight months ago.

Governor Jon Corzine told The Star Ledger only that the plans are on an indefinite hold and state leaders are reevaluating the project.

The New Jersey Stem Cell Institute is a $150 million project intended to be an 18-story research hub in New Brunswick, NJ, uniting more than 50 stem cell researchers currently spread throughout the state.

Last November New Jersey voters voted against borrowing $450 million of state money to fund stem cell science. Regardless, state leaders said construction on the institute would continue. But three weeks after construction started on the building, the project was halted.

Why stay in NJ?

First the Newark Cancer Center and now this. No scientist who can relocate would choose to remain affiliated with NJ's state institutions, if this keeps up.

If we build it, will they come?

Governor Corzine is trying to cut the budget, but now we have yet another laboratory building which is state of the art, but unfinished inside and no one to bring research dollars. The state needs to put the money where their mouth is.
